Using Aromatherapy including Safety Advice
Aromatherapy is the medical use of the therapeutic and aromatic properties of plants. Essential Oils come from liquid found in tiny sacs on plants. They are potent and need to be used with care. Some Aromatherapy Oils are extremely potent and must be used with extra care and respect. Please use sparingly, and NEVER more than the suggested dosage, especially if you have a medical condition.
They should only be used undiluted when specifically instructed to do so. Essential Oils are diluted using Carrier Oils, water or plain bases such as shampoo and bubble bath.
Usually blended together, Essential Oils can be used on the face and body, in the bath, around the home, as an insect repellent plus many more. Please see the relevant articles on these uses for some tips and ideas of recipes, and how to create your own blends.
Essential Oils are associated with colours and can be used in relation to the 7 Chakras. Oils are used with an associated colour that corresponds to the colour of the Chakra you wish to focus on.
MIXING RATIOS
The maximum ratio is 3% essential oil. Therefore you would add no more than 3ml (or 60 drops) of essential oil to 100ml of base or carrier oil. We always find it easier to half the number of mls of carrier oil to get the number of drops to use and this way you will ensure the ratio is below the maximum strength (eg 25 drops for 50ml base, or 1 drop per 2mls). If blending larger amounts, it is handy to know that approx 20 drops of essential oil is equivalent to 1ml.
The general rule for facial use is half the strength.
If only using 1 oil you will not need to use as much.
If you need to make a small blend (eg using only 5ml carrier oil for a 1 session small area massage) you would put only 2 drops essential oil in this amount. But you may be wanting to add more than 2 essential oils. If this is the case you can make up your essential oil blend in a separate cup (or bottle to store it for later use) and then once the essential oils are blended you can add the required number of drops (in this case 2) to the carrier oil. This concentrated blend of oils is what we call a 'synergy blend'.
